Call Accounting and Usage Billing
Call Accounting is not the big job it used to be. Machines are sufficiently powerful that call accounting can be done on the desktop. There is no need for expensive mainframe programs anymore.
Metered Usage and Billing
The cost of your network has to be recovered from your customers. With the ability to meter usage, your company can effectively identify and charge the few who are dominating your server and infrastructure costs. Your company becomes more competitive because you can reduce charges to the majority of customers with low usage.
As we head into the future, usage billing will become more important. For example, Voice Over IP (VOIP) is one of the major steps toward convergence of networks. But VOIP has large network demands, and will require either the metering of calls, or the metering of network traffic. In either case there is no avoiding time honoured call accounting.
